RICHMOND, VA. Music weekdays at 3 p.m. and “The Tavis Smiley Show
” Mondays at 9 a.m. are just two of several March 2015 schedule changes for Richmond independent radio station 97.3 WRIR. Five WRIR DJs will move to new 3 p.m. weekday music times, and WRIR News will schedule 19 new overnight and weekend hours, including rebroadcasts of programs by local news talk hosts Chris Dovi, Don Harrison, and Alane Miles and by “Democracy Now!” national host Amy Goodman.
Weekdays at 3 p.m. beginning March 2, new (and rescheduled) music programs and hosts are: “Tea With Me” with George Reuther on Monday, “Wide Ear Folk” Eric Walters (Tue), “Global A GoGo” Bill Lupoletti (Wed), “Commonwealth of Notions” Shannon Cleary (Thu), and “Pop Goes the World” Enzo Adamari (Fri). All new 3 p.m. music shows hosts are veteran, popular WRIR volunteer DJs.
“Live Wire Radio,” a comedy, music, interview, variety show starring Luke Burbank, moves to Saturday at 5 p.m. and “Interfaith Voices” leads a new three hour public affairs block Sundays at 6 a.m. These changes mark WRIR’s first regularly scheduled weekend news and public affairs programs.
Weekday mornings, “The Takeaway” with John Hockenberry moves to 10 a.m., making way at 9 a.m. for “The Tavis Smiley Show” (Mon), and the locally and regionally produced “Backstory” (Tue), “Full Disclosure Radio” (Wed), “Community Conversations on Recovery” (Thu), and “RVA Report” (Fri). Schedule changes are just part of WRIR’s plans for the next decade. The station’s ongoing, year long, 10th anniversary efforts include a special WRIR X beer brewed by Hardywood Park (which is now available widely in Richmond), and coming this spring. WRIR Studio C, an all new community radio broadcast studio now under construction that is funded by listeners and grants.
WRIR 97.3 FM began broadcasting on January 1, 2005. Now the City of Richmond’s official emergency broadcasting partner, in 2009 WRIR received a Richmond Community Service Award for outstanding commitment and service to the community from Richmond City Council. In 2010, Paste Magazine named WRIR “one of the 40 best little radio stations in the U.S,” and, again this year, readers of Style Weekly voted 97.3 WRIR Richmond’s “best local radio station for music.” The station’s signal is heard in and near the City of Richmond, Virginia and worldwide at wrir.org.
